WHY COUNSELLING?
BACKGROUND

In counselling, you do most of the talking: you are the best-informed person about yourself, after all. My part is first to listen fully, without judgment and with openness to your situation, and to reflect back clearly what I hear. This first stage may do some of the heavy lifting by itself, and you may want just to stop there . Where we go next can take a variety of routes; 'here and now' using the body, creative approaches, or a sharing of theoretical understanding. Whether long or short term work is entered into, mutual agreement and respect are central. Either way, we aim to get to the heart of the matter, finding your own wisdom, sanity, and capacity for love in the situation you have brought, and to bring about the change that you need.

  • Jonathan has been a practising Buddhist for three decades, instructing meditation in the Rigpa Tibetan Buddhist tradition since 2009, and brings this understanding to JPR counselling . He studied TA counselling and psychotherapy at The Link Centre, Sussex. Before counselling, he had a career in classical music and therapeutic arts with visually impaired children and young people, bringing body and voice work as a musician into a clinical setting. Passionate about ecology, he helps to run a smallholding in Sussex based on permaculture principles .

EXPERIENCE

For nearly three decades I have used music and creative approaches therapeutically with children and adults with disabilities. Alongside this work, I have been a lifelong musician, playing both classical guitar and percussion professionally. These experiences have given me a deep appreciation of creativity, expression and connection, and continue to inform my counselling practice (begun in 2017), particularly when working with clients who find that words alone do not always capture their experiences. I work also with a wide range of English-speaking clients worldwide; from young people navigating adulthood to those with end-of-life issues. I am an accredited member of the NCPS (National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society) and abide by its code of ethical practise.
